Speaking Animal is a research project at Northumbria University, funded by the Leverhulme Trust.
The project is based in the creative writing department and draws on other disciplines. It investigates how humans and animals understand one another, or fail to.
By shadowing people, from scientists to butchers, who know about animal lives, as research for a novel whose characters are animals as well as humans, the project will think about what it is to be an animal, and whether writing about animals might reduce – or extend – the distance between us and them.
This website publishes stories from the research as it happens.
